EDMONTON - The first bronze medal for the Humber Hawks in the
Canadian college soccer championship came when the Ontario female
champs topped the Concordia Thunder 3-2 in a shootout.
Brittany Szerbaker and Samantha Batten scored for the Hawks, who
enjoyed a clear margin in the first half.
Jordan Staples and Victoria Gull replied for Concordia to force a
scoreless 30-minute overtime that led to the shootout. After their
dull performance in the opening 45 minutes, the Thunder was clearly
in charge for most of the second half.
This second loss in succession was especially disappointing for the
Thunder, who entered as reigning national champions and went
undefeated through all of 2009 and the full 2010 season before
competing in these playoffs.
Concordia bowed to FX Garneau on Friday while competing for a berth
in the final.
WOMEN’S CCAA TOURNAMENT ALL-STARS &
MVP
Scoring leader Lea Chastenay-Joseph of the champion Garneau Elans
was honoured yesterday (Saturday) as most valuable player in
women’s competition at the Canadian women’s national
soccer championship.
She was joined on the tournament all-star team by gold-medal
colleagues Kathleen Berube-Garneau, Frederique Paradis and
goalkeeper Joelle Morasse.
The NAIT Ooks, who bowed 3-0 in the final, had Leanne Kadatz, Kelly
Tataryn and Claire McWilliam chosen, while Shanay Sangha of the
Kwantlen Eagles and Kelly Anderson of the Concordia Thunder were
selected along with Sonia Rocha and Samantha Batten of the Humber
Hawks.
The Holland Hurricanes, representing the Maritimes in the four-day
event, won the Canadian College Athletic Association fair play
award.
GAME 2: HUMBER 2 - KWANTLEN 1
Keyla Moreno and Sam Batten both scored to lead the Humber Hawks to
a 2-1 win over Kwantlen, securing a berth in the CCAA bronze medal
game.
Meghan Nilsson scored Kwantlen's lone marker.
Sonia Rocha and Brittaney McNeill were named players of the game
for Humber and Kwantlen, respectively.
GAME 1: NAIT 3 - HUMBER 3
(NAIT wins 4-2 in penalty kicks)
In what was arguably the most entertaining match of the day, the
NAIT Ooks surpassed the Humber Hawks 4-3 despite twice giving up 2
goal leads. The Ooks led 2-0 and 3-1 before the Hawks were able to
claw their way back into the match with two second half goals.
NAIT’s Claire McWilliams and Humber’s Angela Solarz
each had a pair of goals while the Ooks’ Lisa Martin and the
Hawks’ Keyla Moreno added solo tallies to send the contest to
extra time.
The Hawks were the more aggressive team in the extra frame but
NAIT’s goaltender Tara Evans denied all chances and then went
on to stop two penalty kicks leading her team to a 4-2 penalty kick
victory.
