MORENO NAMED OCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

TORONTO - Humber College's Keyla Moreno was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer player of the year in a ceremony held at the Toronto Airport Hotel on Thursday evening.

The forward scored six goals in eight games, leading Humber to the regular season championship in the West region. Humber was perfect during the 2011 OCAA regular season, winning all eight of its matches. Her 31 goals ranks her second at Humber all-time to OCAA career scoring leader Joanna Vitale's 56.

Moreno (Toronto) was also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian as well as an OCAA all-star. Moreno's Humber College hosts the 2011 OCAA soccer championships beginning Friday.

Joining Moreno as an all-Canadian is midfielder Chelsea Saunders of the Algonquin Thunder. Saunders (Ottawa) scored one goal in seven games, but was a leader on an Algonquin team that was named the East region's top defensive team allowing only two goals against all season. Saunders was also named an OCAA all-star.

Nicole McDonald (St. Thomas, Ont.) of the Fanshawe Falcons was named OCAA rookie of the year. The midfielder scored three goals in seven matches, helping lead Fanshawe to a 7-1-0 record. McDonald was also named rookie of the year in the West region.

McDonald's head coach, Martin Painter, is the CCAA coach of the year nominee from OCAA. Fanshawe finished in second place in the West region, averaging a league-best five goals per game while giving up just four goals in total. Painter is also the coach of the year in the West region.

Other major award winners included OCAA scoring champion Ashley Hagen of Mohawk. Hagan (Ancaster, Ont.) scored a dozen goals in eight matches for an average of 1.50 goals per game. Hagan is also the West region scoring champion, and an OCAA all-star. East region scoring champion Jennifer Sheehan of Durham is also an OCAA all-star. Sheehan (Whitby, Ont.) scored nine goals in seven matches for an average of 1.29 goals per game.

Karly Howard (Lucknow, Ont.) of Fleming-Peterborough was named the OCAA East region rookie of the year, while teammate Emily Clute (Sutton, Ont.) was named the top goalkeeper in the East for the second straight season. Durham's Chelsey Rogatinsky (Pickering, Ont.) and Humber's Hayley Green (Tottenham, Ont.) were named top defensive players in the East and West regions, respectively. Rogatinsky was also named an OCAA all-star. Katerina Conde (Toronto) of Humber was named top goalkeeper of the West region. Humber was also named top defensive team in the West, allowing just three goals in eight games.

Garth Gittens of Algonquin was named coach of the year in the East region. Gittens led Algonquin to a second-straight East region regular season championship with a record of 6-0-1. Algonquin, along with the Seneca Sting, were co-winners of the top defensive team award in the East region, as both teams allowed just two goals against during the regular season.

A total of 34 OCAA all-stars were named, including Algonquin's Sydney Midwood (Kingston, Ont.); Melissa Kennedy (Oakville, Ont.) and Maria Tayag (Scarborough, Ont.) of Centennial; Celine and Michelle DeRepentigny (Cornwall, Ont.) of La Cite; Tierney King (Mount Albert, Ont.) and Brittany MacMillan (Cole Harbour, N.S.) of Fleming-Peterborough; Loyalist's Lindsey Buck (Belleville, Ont.) and Carly Simons (Stratford, Ont.); Emily Colangelo (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Sabrina Henry (Bolton, Ont.) of Seneca; Melissa Benton (Avonmore, Ont.) and Mallory McQueen (Kingston, Ont.) of St. Lawrence-Kingston; Conestoga's Heather Buckie (Guelph, Ont.) and Cassie Latyn (Kitchener, Ont.); Bailey Maxwell (St. Thomas, Ont.) and Leah Slamen (Barrie, Ont.) of Fanshawe; Humber's Nicole Carvalho (Toronto); Deidre Bradd and Lauren De Jong of Lambton; Mohawk's Shelby Dawdy (Carlisle, Ont.); Brittany Johnston (Ridgeway, Ont.) and Justine Keller (Niagara Falls, Ont.) of Niagara; Redeemer's Rachel Passchier (Pickering, Ont.) and Kristi Van Duyvendyk (St. Thomas, Ont.); Carrie Long (Harrow, Ont.) and Rica Rabanes (LaSalle, Ont.) of St. Clair; and Sheridan's Sarah Couto (Brampton, Ont.) and Nina Mennite (Mississauga, Ont.).
