TORONTO - Humber College's Keyla Moreno was
named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's
soccer player of the year in a ceremony held at the Toronto Airport
Hotel on Thursday evening.
The forward scored six goals in eight games, leading Humber to the
regular season championship in the West region. Humber was perfect
during the 2011 OCAA regular season, winning all eight of its
matches. Her 31 goals ranks her second at Humber all-time to OCAA
career scoring leader Joanna Vitale's 56.
Moreno (Toronto) was also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic
Association (CCAA) all-Canadian as well as an OCAA all-star.
Moreno's Humber College hosts the 2011 OCAA soccer championships
beginning Friday.
Joining Moreno as an all-Canadian is midfielder Chelsea
Saunders of the Algonquin Thunder. Saunders (Ottawa)
scored one goal in seven games, but was a leader on an Algonquin
team that was named the East region's top defensive team allowing
only two goals against all season. Saunders was also named an OCAA
all-star.
Nicole McDonald (St. Thomas, Ont.) of the
Fanshawe Falcons was named OCAA rookie of the year. The midfielder
scored three goals in seven matches, helping lead Fanshawe to a
7-1-0 record. McDonald was also named rookie of the year in the
West region.
McDonald's head coach, Martin Painter, is the
CCAA coach of the year nominee from OCAA. Fanshawe finished in
second place in the West region, averaging a league-best five goals
per game while giving up just four goals in total. Painter is also
the coach of the year in the West region.
Other major award winners included OCAA scoring champion
Ashley Hagen of Mohawk. Hagan (Ancaster, Ont.)
scored a dozen goals in eight matches for an average of 1.50 goals
per game. Hagan is also the West region scoring champion, and an
OCAA all-star. East region scoring champion Jennifer
Sheehan of Durham is also an OCAA all-star. Sheehan
(Whitby, Ont.) scored nine goals in seven matches for an average of
1.29 goals per game.
Karly Howard (Lucknow, Ont.) of
Fleming-Peterborough was named the OCAA East region rookie of the
year, while teammate Emily Clute (Sutton, Ont.)
was named the top goalkeeper in the East for the second straight
season. Durham's Chelsey Rogatinsky (Pickering,
Ont.) and Humber's Hayley Green (Tottenham, Ont.)
were named top defensive players in the East and West regions,
respectively. Rogatinsky was also named an OCAA all-star.
Katerina Conde (Toronto) of Humber was named top
goalkeeper of the West region. Humber was also named top defensive
team in the West, allowing just three goals in eight games.
Garth Gittens of Algonquin was named coach of the
year in the East region. Gittens led Algonquin to a second-straight
East region regular season championship with a record of 6-0-1.
Algonquin, along with the Seneca Sting, were co-winners of the top
defensive team award in the East region, as both teams allowed just
two goals against during the regular season.
A total of 34 OCAA all-stars were named, including Algonquin's
Sydney Midwood (Kingston, Ont.); Melissa
Kennedy (Oakville, Ont.) and Maria Tayag
(Scarborough, Ont.) of Centennial; Celine and
Michelle DeRepentigny (Cornwall, Ont.) of La Cite;
Tierney King (Mount Albert, Ont.) and
Brittany MacMillan (Cole Harbour, N.S.) of
Fleming-Peterborough; Loyalist's Lindsey Buck
(Belleville, Ont.) and Carly Simons (Stratford,
Ont.); Emily Colangelo (St. Catharines, Ont.) and
Sabrina Henry (Bolton, Ont.) of Seneca;
Melissa Benton (Avonmore, Ont.) and
Mallory McQueen (Kingston, Ont.) of St.
