Mohawk's soccer teams came back from rainy Kitchener with a draw and a loss against the Conestoga Condors in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association opening day action Friday (Sep. 23)

The men had to settle for a 3-3 tie in a real see-saw battle. The Mountaineers jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes on goals by Adam Petrina and Alex Pereira. But Conestoga got one back by half time and then scored twice early in the second half to grab a 3-2 lead. It appeared Mohawk would go home defeated when they were reduced to ten men, as Daniel Trombetta was sent off following a second yellow card.
But with just minutes to go, the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick and  Stefan Radoman scored the equalizer from the spot.

Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett was satisfied with the result. He noted they missed several chances to put the game away when they led 2-0 and acknowledged Conestoga missed some chances too. "It was a fair result for both teams, said Bennett. "I know we can score some goals and we have to tighten up on defense. We're not quite up to game fitness yet, but it looks promising. I'm quite happy with the players."

The Mountaineers next play the Fanshawe Falcons in London Wednesday September 28 at 5:00 pm.

They then  have their home opener against St. Clair Saints, Friday September 30 at Mohawk Sports Park. Kickoff will be 4:30 pm.

The women's soccer team got off to a shaky start, losing 3-0 to Conestoga.
Mohawk co-head coach Renzo Castellani said corner kicks were the story of this game. The Mountaineers couldn't convert their's early and the Condors got all three of their goals from corners. "We need to work on corners," said Castellani, who said otherwise, the defense played well, while the offense just couldn't finish. He praised the play of sweeper Shelby Dawdy and stopper Jaclyn Halliday and said his rookies performed well.  

The Mountaineer women next go to London Tuesday (Sep. 27) for a 5:00 pm tilt with the Fanshawe Falcons.

Mohawk then returns home to meet St. Clair Saints Friday September 30 at 4:30pm at Mohawk Sports Park.
