ANCASTER, Ont. – Through the opening 45 minutes the
Sheridan Bruins women's soccer team (2-0 OCAA) were creating
opportunities, but unable to capitalize on them.
Once the second half begun, however, things started to fall into
place and they found the back of the net four times on their way to
a 4-0 triumph over Mohawk.
"As usual it took us a little while to get started - definitely
more than 45 minutes - but we got the job done and with conviction,
so that's the key," assistant coach Nadene Boothe said. "We still
have some work to do, but we feel good about this result."
The opening goal for the double-blue game in the 50th minute when
Kaylin MacEthron quickly played a short corner kick into Tiffany
Phillips, who immediately returned the ball.
MacEthron then crossed the ball towards the box and it curled into
the top corner on the near side.
Twenty-six minutes later Kaitlyn MacLellan was taken down in the
18-yard and then promptly stepped up and converted from the penalty
spot with a hard drive to the lower left corner.
Just three minutes later, Sheridan added to their tally when a
long ball was played into the Mohawk box and after the keeper
couldn't handle it, Kendra Cooper was on the spot to tap it
home.
In the 90th minute MacLellan added her second goal of the contest
and fourth for the Lady Bruins when she was able to cash-in, after
receiving a long pass from Andrea Robillard.
Lianne Slichter turned aside all the shots she faced in picking up
the clean sheet.
Although the club had nearly a full week between their first and
second contests, they now have just two days to prepare for a
weekend set against St. Clair (on Saturday) and Lambton (on
Sunday).
Boothe says the emphasis in the next couple of days will be on
player health and fitness.
"The unfortunate part is you can catch some injuries early on,"
she said. "So we'll try to rest up and hope the girls keep hydrated
and have their muscles ready to go on the weekend."
