MOHAWK 1, REDEEMER 0

The Mohawk Mountaineers scored a pair of narrow wins over the Redeemer Royals in OCAA  soccer play at Redeemer in Ancaster Saturday (Sep. 22).

The Mohawk men just got by their hosts 3-2 in a real see-saw battle, while the Mohawk women got a late goal to win 1-0.

In the men's game, the Royals led 1-0 at half time. About 10 minutes into the second half the Mountaineers equalized on a Matt Kernick penalty. Patryk Korbut put Mohawk ahead 2-1 on the 80th minute, but Redeemer tied the game again five minutes later. However Colin Dougan gave his team the victory with his 88th minute marker.

"It wasn't the best game by us," said Mohawk coach Richard Bennett, "but a win is a win. We are going to regroup in practice and take it from there."

With the victory the Mountaineers moved into sole possession of second place in the West Region with a 3-1 record. They are one point back of Fanshawe.

The Mohawk women improved to 2-2 while Redeemer slipped to 0-3-2.

The twin sisters were at it again. Jody Hagen cleared the ball from her team's goal line and then Ashley Hagen scored her fourth goal of the season in the final minute of play for Mohawk's one goal decision.

"We played well," said co-head coach Michael Castellani. "We improved our defense and movement with the ball. Jody played outstanding on defense and Ashley scored a beautiful goal."
