TORONTO - After 15 years of leading the Seneca Sting program and enough hardware to fill a trophy case, Seneca Sting soccer head coach Vito Colangelo is passing along the clipboard.
In 1999, Vito joined Seneca after much success with the Humber Hawks. Since taking over the men's soccer program at Seneca, Colangelo earned an 84-22-26 outdoor coaching record, and the following accolades:
- Six-time East Division champion
- OCAA gold, four silver medals and three bronze medals
- CCAA gold (2009) and a CCAA silver medal
Colangelo built a national reputation for both the Seneca program and himself, as he was twice named CCAA coach of the year.
Vito's soccer career also included a road trip to China where Seneca had its first taste of international experience, playing five friendlies resulting in a 2-2-1 record, a most respectable touring outcome.
Through Vito's efforts, an indoor program was added to the Seneca varsity program list where he led the Sting to an additional OCAA championship and five more OCAA medals.
In 2010, Vito also took on the coaching duties of the Seneca
women's outdoor and indoor soccer programs, where he quickly moved
the women's teams to new heights with a 24-4-4 league record that
included OCAA East Division championships in both indoor and
outdoor, an OCAA silver medal in outdoor (2013) and capping off his
career at Seneca with an OCAA championship in women's indoor soccer
this past season.
Colangelo's calm and easy-going nature personified his approach,
but even more so, it was his mastery as a technician and strategist
that annually produced great players and successful results.
To show their appreciation and commemorate Colangelo's
accomplishments, the Sting recognized Colangelo's career
achievements with a coaching excellence banner at the Athletics and
Recreation awards banquet held recently.
The Sting would like to wish Vito continued success in his new
pursuits and much happiness in the years ahead.
