FANSHAWE 4, REDEEMER 0

LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe women's soccer team hosted the Redeemer Royals on Saturday for its first regular season game of the season. The Falcons came out on top by a final score of 4-0.

Fanshawe controlled the ball from the opening minute and didn't take long to get onto the scoreboard. In the fifth minute, captain Niki McDonald found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. In the 18th minute, a cross from Fanshawe's Meaghen Orr found the foot of forward Marisa Oliveira which quickly gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons kept the pressure on and after a scramble in the Redeemer end, McDonald sent a ball into the box which bounced off a Redeemer player and into the net, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the half.

The second half was much of the same, with the ball in the Redeemer zone for the majority of the game. Any attempt by Redeemer was quickly denied by the Fanshawe defence. Redeemer's Grace Berkel provided some outstanding goalkeeping to keep her team in the game. In the 84th minute, Haley O'Brien added another goal, making the final score 4-0.

"I am very happy with the start to the season," said Fanshawe head coach James Welsh. "The girls worked hard and implemented our game plan very well."

The Falcons next match will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. on the road against the Humber Hawks. Last season, Fanshawe lost to Humber in the OCAA provincial final.
