SENECA 4, LA CITE 0

TORONTO - The Seneca Sting women's soccer team started strong on Sunday afternoon, taking the play to the La Cité Coyotes from the opening whistle and earned a 4-0 victory.

Nicole Forbes (Ajax), Hilda Chmait (Mississauga), Cassandra Nicolodi (Toronto) and Emma Gattoni (Thornhill) each netted a goal for the Sting as they improved to 2-0-1 on the season. Rachel Dorland (Richmond Hill) earned the shutout in net.

The Sting came out and swarmed the overmatched Coyotes early. The ball crossed into the Sting side of half a handful of occasions in the opening half, with the Sting resetting their offence and attacking again each time. Despite the constant pressure, the Sting were not able to beat Coyotes goalkeeper Cassandra Tremblay early on. The best chance early came on a free kick when Victoria Curci (Aurora) sent a curling shot between a wall of defenders, only to have the shot narrowly miss the left post.

Seneca got on the board in the 32nd minute on a goal by Nicolodi. Forbes sent a crossing pass from the goalkeeper's left side right to Nicolodi who contacted the ball with a right foot out of midair, into the back of the net. Forbes added to the Sting lead in the 44th minute with a tap in to the bottom right corner of the Coyotes net following a nice centering pass which eluded a defender.

A foul negated a goal by the Sting midway through the second half as Samantha Macchione (Maple) collided with the Coyotes goalkeeper. The disallowed goal would not slow down the Sting as Stephanie Harris (Bradford) hit Chmait in stride down the left side. Chmait fired a curling shot with her left foot which bounced in off the far post in the 76th minute.

Gattoni, playing just her second home match in a Sting uniform, completed the scoring with a highlight goal. Gattoni took the ball, beat two defenders and fired a left foot over the goalkeeper from 25 yards out which brought the fans to their feet.

The Sting are off until Friday when they travel to play the St. Lawrence Vikings at 2:30 p.m. The Coyotes also play their next match Friday when they welcome George Brown at 6 p.m.
