ANCASTER, Ont. - It's a good thing Mohawk College's soccer teams play their home games on the artificial turf at Redeemer University College in Ancaster. Otherwise the matches between the Mountaineers and St. Clair Saints Saturday (Sept. 21) would have been a mud bowl after quite a downpour hit the area. Fortunately the system went through and it turned out to be just damp and cool for the rest of the night.
In the opening game, Mohawk blanked St. Clair 4-0 in women's play, scoring two goals in each half. Rachelle DeJong (Ancaster) opened the scoring in the 35th minute, then four minutes later it was Marie-Pier Schleichkorn (Burlington) with a brilliant free kick from well outside the 18-yard box.
The scoreline remained the same until back-to-back penalties against the Saints and Shari Leavitt (Mississauga) and Emily Willrich (Hamilton) were each successful in the 79th and 84th minute respectively.
Nicole Roberts (Ancaster) got the shutout.
With the victory, Mohawk evened it's record at 2-2 while St. Clair fell to 0-2.
In the men's game, St. Clair withstood a big rally by Mohawk, holding on for a 4-3 victory.
It looked like a walk in the park for the Saints, as they grabbed a 4-0 lead on goals by Chris Delgago, Jordan Lidia, and a pair by Gabriel Poulino. The second goal by Poulino, early in the second half, was as good a strike as one would see at any level of the sport - an absolute laser from long range.
However, the game took a dramatic turn as Mohawk struck for three goals in a span of four minutes. Anthony Halm (Brampton) got two and Stefan Radoman (Hamilton) notched a single and St. Clair's lead was suddenly very shaky. But the Saints settled down and although the Mountaineers had several chances in the late going, they could not get on even terms.
Mohawk is now 2-2, while St. Clair is 1-1-1.

The St. Clair College women's soccer team was on the road this past weekend and came away with their first point of the season.
In the women's match against Mohawk on Saturday St. Clair struggled to a 4-0 loss. The Saints played well and had several great chances to score but struggled to put the ball into the net. Mohawk improved to 2-2 on the season with the win.
On Sunday, the women travelled to Welland to take on the Niagara Knights and came away with a hard fought 1-1 draw. Niagara's record improved to one win, two losses and a draw.
The Saints went up early four minutes into the match on a nice goal by Emily Ditty (St. Anne's). Niagara tied the game up on the 20th minute. Neither team could score again as both goalies made some great saves throughout the rest of the match. Jordyn Lowes (Riverside) was solid in net for St. Clair.
The women now have no wins, two losses and one tie through their regular season in the tough OCAA West Division.
The St. Clair women are next in action on Saturday, Sept. 28 when the face the Conestoga Condors at the United Communities Credit Union Complex in Amherstburg at 2 p.m.
