MOHAWK 1, SHERIDAN 1

OAKVILLE, Ont. - With the final three games of their regular season all coming within the space of one week, the Sheridan Bruins women's soccer team (3-2-1 OCAA) did not kick that stretch off in the fashion that they would have hoped for, struggling to piece together a 90-minute performance and settling for a 1-1 draw with Mohawk.

"Well, I think we played 12 minutes of good soccer and scored a goal," Sheridan head coach Paul Angelini said. "The rest of the time we had difficulty stringing two or three passes together to free up people in the bottom third of the field and a tie is the result."

Both sides had pretty equal possession of the ball in the first half, but it would be Mohawk who would lead when the first 45 minutes had expired after getting a goal in the final two minutes of the first half on a free kick 30 yards from goal.

The Double-Blue were able to re-group at halftime and seemed to have a renewed intensity once the second half began, drawing level nearing the hour.

Kendra Cooper was able to win a one-on-one battle down the right wing and slid the cross into the area for Kayla McPherson-Brassington who put it away.

Sheridan had a couple of more chances in the moments following their goal, but couldn't find the touch necessary to capitalize.

They have two days to prepare for showdown against Fanshawe in the penultimate game of their season and one that could prove critical in determining the table positioning for both clubs.

Angelini has seen plenty of good play from his side throughout the year, but it just hasn't always been there for prolonged stretches. He says that making some small improvements in one area may hold the key to maintaining that level on a minute-to-minute, half-to-half and game-to-game basis.

"I think it's more consistency in our short game," he said. "It seems that if we can string a few passes together that that will create the space that we need in order to execute what we like to do and can attack. When we do that consistently, we do very well."

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Even with a handful of players not available, the Mohawk women's soccer team came up with a valuable point in their 1-1 away draw at Sheridan College in Oakville Saturday (Sept. 28).

The result left both the Mountaineers and Bruins with identical 3-2-1 records and a tie for fourth place in the Western Division.

Mohawk's Marie-Pier Schleichkorn (Burlington) scored her second free kick goal of the season in the first half. Sheridan equalized midway through the second half on what Mountaineer co-head coach Michael Castellani said was only the second clear chance the home side had.

"We played really well today," said Castellani. "(We) pressured the ball at all times and played a controlled game. We played a strong defensive game."
