DURHAM 7, LA CITE 1

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Algonquin College on Friday at Vaso's Field before defeating La Cite College 7-1 Saturday afternoon.

Friday saw Algonquin start fast as they pressured the Lords early in the game before scoring in the 13th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

This goal appeared to drive the Lords forward as they took control of possession and began to go on the offensive. In the 17th minute, Durham found the equalizer as Jade Kurham (Oshawa, Ont.) put a poor clearing attempt by Algonquin back into the net to make it 1-1.

Starting goalkeeper Alicia Del Fuoco (Whitby, Ont.) was then put to the test for the remainder of half. Algonquin earned several threatening free kicks in the 22nd, 24th and 29th minute but Del Fuoco was able to successfully keep Algonquin from pulling ahead.

In extra time of the first half the Lords pulled ahead 2-1 as Kurham found the back of the net for her second goal of the game by converting a Lords corner kick from Brittney Sero (Newcastle, Ont.). However, Algonquin tied the game 2-2 in the 57th minute on a penalty kick. Both teams battled for possession but saw the remainder of the game end in a stalemate.

Saturday saw an explosive effort from the Lords against La Cite including a five goal surge in the second half.

Sero opened the scoring for the Lords on a penalty kick in the 16th minute. This goal along with her second of the match in the 67th minute increased her season total to eight goals through six games.

Other goal scorers for the Lords included Chelsey Rogatinsky (Bowmanville, Ont.), Kristina Crawford (Burlington, Ont.) who recorded her first career goal as a Lord and Kaela Stinchcombe (Toronto) who recorded a hat-trick.

"The team is just starting to come together," said Durham head coach Dave Staley about his team's recent success. "We have a lot of first year players and the team is really starting to gel now."

The Lords will now travel to face George Brown College on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Durham trails Algonquin (5-0-2) and Seneca (5-0-1) for first place in the OCAA East region.
