SENECA 5, FLEMING 0

TORONTO – Fresh off a national ranking for the first time all season, the 11th ranked Seneca Sting stormed out of the locker room and rolled to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Fleming Knights.

The win was the sixth-in-a-row for the Sting, who now sit at 7-0-1 on the season. During the six match win streak, the Sting have outscored their opponents 25-1 thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Coming into the match, Seneca had two players with four goals and three more with three a piece, compared to second place St. Lawrence (K) who has received sixty-two percent of their goals from just two players.

Seneca opened the scoring in the fourth minute on a goal by Emma Gattoni (Thornhill). Few knew that the early goal by Gattoni was a preview of the first half. Gattoni struck again in the ninth minute for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Sting continued their offensive onslaught, peppering the Knights until the 17th minute when Cassandra Nicolodi (Toronto) gave the Sting a three-goal lead. Following a Sting shot off the far post, Nicolodi, who originally overran the ball, came back, secured possession and tapped home the rebound.

Following a number of Sting opportunities that either missed just high or just wide, Gattoni struck again in the 32nd minute. Stephanie Harris (Bradford) started the play by beating a defender.  Harris sent the ball towards the 18 yard box to teammate Rita Keimakh (Maple). Keimakh, on a two-on-one with Gattoni, sent a pass ahead where Gattoni fired a left-footed shot past the Knights keeper for a 4-0 lead.

Keimakh nearly scored moments later, but her shot hit the crossbar.

Halftime did little to slow the Sting offence. In the 50th minute, Keimakh received a pass and moved toward the centre of the field. In midstride, Keimakh struck a shot from 16 yards out which found the back of the net in the bottom right corner of the net to complete the scoring.

The Sting host the Durham Lords in their regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Knights will travel to play Centennial on Saturday 1 p.m.
