FANSHAWE 2, MOHAWK 1

LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe women's soccer team (3-1-2) hosted the Mohawk Mountaineers (3-2-1) on Saturday, Oct. 5. With playoff implications on the line, Fanshawe stepped up and won the match 2-1.

Both teams battled to control the ball with the cold weather and slippery conditions. In the 32nd minute, Mohawk sent a ball across the Fanshawe box, which skipped along the wet grass and into the goal. Mohawk took the 1-0 lead into the half.

One minute into the second half, Fanshawe's captain Niki McDonald tied the game up, burying the ball into the back of the net. In the 70th minute, Falcon Alex Chesney made a nice run down the right side of the field, beat her defender and knocked in the go ahead goal. Fanshawe's defence stepped up in the final minutes and held on to win the game 2-1.

Fanshawe head coach James Welsh was happy with the win but is already focused on Sunday's final regular season match. "It was a great team effort. The girls knew what was at stake and came through in the second half. Now we to prepare for our big game tomorrow versus St. Clair."

The Falcons last regular season game of the year takes place on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Fanshawe soccer field versus the St. Clair Saints (0-5-1). The game starts at 12 p.m.
