FANSHAWE 2, ST. CLAIR 0

LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe Falcons women's soccer team hosted the St. Clair Saints (0-6-1) on Sunday, Oct. 6 for their final regular season game of the year. The Falcons came away with the victory and improved to 5-2-1 on the season.

The Falcons had a number of chances in the first 10 minutes of the game but came away empty. In the 39th minute, Falcon Alex Chesney took a shot from 30 yards out which took one bounce right through the legs of the Saints goalie and into the net.

In the 44th minute, Fanshawe's Rebecca Liberatore squeezed past two defenders and buried a ball into the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the half.

Fanshawe played tough defence in the second half, holding the Saints to a limited number of chances to score. The Falcons held on and won the match 2-0.

Captain Niki McDonald was excited for the team and is looking forward to the post season. "Throughout the season, we have come together as a team. We have a lot of potential on our squad to go far into the playoffs."

With the win today, the Falcons lock up second place in the OCAA West Division. They will receive a bye for the first round of the playoffs and will now host a quarter-final playoff game on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m. on the Fanshawe soccer field.

The St. Clair College women's varsity soccer team earned a split on the road this weekend.

On Saturday, the Saints travelled to Ancaster, Ont. to take on the Redeemer Royals and came away with their first win of the season. In an exciting back and forth match, St. Clair managed to pull out a 3-2 win.

Laura Parent (St. Joseph's) put St. Clair up 1-0 in the sixth minute and the score was 1-0 at halftime. Redeemer tied it up early in the second half before the Saints took the lead again in the 64th minute on a nice goal by Nicole Hay (Wexford Collegiate-Toronto). However, Redeemer bounced back and tied it up in the 84th minute.

Just over three minutes later though St. Clair got the winning goal by Catherine Almeida (Holy Names) with less than five minutes remaining in the match. Macie Zurczak (Holy Names) played a solid game in goal in picking up the win. With the loss Redeemer's record fell to 1-6 on the season.

On Sunday, the Saints were in London, Ont. to take on the top-ranked Fanshawe Falcons. This game was rescheduled from earlier in the season after severe weather caused the orginal game to be postponed. Fanshawe is ranked third in Ontario and 13th in Canada.

St. Clair put up a great effort against the Falcons but ending up losing by a score of 2-0. Fanshawe scored both of their goals late in the first half. With the win the Falcons ended their regular season with a record of 5-1-2.

The St. Clair women ended their OCAA regular season with a record of 1-6-1 and will miss out on the playoffs this season.
