OTTAWA - The Seneca Sting are champions of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer, defeating defending provincial champion Algonquin by a score of 1-0 at the 2014 belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship.

Seneca avenged a 2-1 loss to Algonquin in last year's final. The 2014 belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship was hosted by Algonquin College.

Fittingly, it was OCAA league all-star Emma Gattoni (Thornhill, Ont.) who scored the winning goal for Seneca in the 56th minute. The third-year midfielder was the team's leading scorer with 10 goals during the regular season.

Algonquin was undefeated entering the match, shutting out opponents in nine straight matches until its 5-1 semi-final victory against Cambrian. Seneca's only loss of the season came in a 1-0 defeat at Algonquin on Sept. 27. The Sting edged Humber 3-2 in the semi-finals.

Seneca wins its first OCAA women's soccer title since 1995. Sting fourth-year defender Hilda Chmait (Mississauga, Ont.) was named championship most valuable player and second-year goalkeeper Rachel Dorland (Richmond Hill, Ont.) was named a championship all-star.

Cambrian College earned its first-ever OCAA medal in women's soccer with its 1-0 victory over Humber in the bronze medal match. Fittingly, it was OCAA player of the year Tiffany Johnson (Sudbury, Ont.) who scored the winning goal for Cambrian. The third-year forward led all of OCAA with 16 regular season goals.

Cambrian's only three losses of 2014 came against division rivals Seneca and Algonquin, two teams that topped the podium above of the Golden Shield.

Johnson was named a championship all-star, along with Algonquin's fifth-year defender Chelsea Lanos (Ottawa) and third-year forward Vanessa Macmillan (Ottawa).

Seneca will now represent Ontario at the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship in Medicine Hat, Alta. from Nov. 5-8. No OCAA team has ever won an CCAA women's soccer championship.
